DATE CORRECTION & Notes on the DCNF November Meeting:

IMPORTANT CORRECTION: The DCNF Holiday Party will be on Saturday December 12^th. An incorrect date was previously announced. The party will be from 4-7 at Emily Millett's house.

Meeting Notes:

We had another wonderful and informative meeting Monday night.

The meeting started with the confirmation of the new board members. More on that in a later post

Ion Sancho dropped in to give us his periodic update on the very bad election laws the legislature continues to pass.

Then the featured speaker Karen Thurman, Democratic Party Chair, gave us some news on statewide issues. Karen was very upbeat about the state of the party, indicating it was in the best condition in a decade. The Obama campaign left the Democrats with a rich database of new voters and the party continues to update these profiles. Ms. Thurman indicated that if the party can gain 6 to 10 seats in the Florida legislature Democrats will have the power to force more honest lawmaking in the Capital.

Karen indicated the Governor's Office is the most important prize next year. The VETO pen could stop a lot of bad laws from passing.

Much mention was made of Allen Boyd and his opposition to the House healthcare bill. The general consensus was that we must continue to call and or write his office and let him know that most of us want healthcare reform and that those showing up to yell at public meetings are a small minority. Boyd will have another chance to vote on this bill once it is combined with the Senate bill, so let him know who the real majority is.

Ms. Thurman provided an interesting discourse on why the Party has no statewide platform explaining that Florida is such a politically diverse State that a policy for South Florida might not be the right one for North Florida.

I think a general message for the night was that if we can elect a few more Democrats to office we will drastically increase our ability to effect change. So stop whining and get out there and elect Democrats.
